Benchmark Recovery Center offers a minimum 90-day residential program in Texas for adult women and men who are trying to get their lives back together. You might ask, “why just for men?” We’ve chosen to have male residents only, because gender-specific sober living environments provide quicker assimilation of the tools necessary for permanent recovery.
With a recovery environment focusing on just one gender, it is easier for residents to express themselves and talk openly about their problems. And until you are able to understand and bond with people of the same sex, and also with god as you understand him, you’re not fully able to connect with people of the opposite sex.
This is the belief that we and other recovery centers hold. With recovery in our longer-stay, all male residents environment, we believe men can integrate their physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual selves to achieve the inner peace necessary to stay sober.
Gender-Specific Recovery Center
It goes without saying that men and women can be completely different in the ways that they think, act, and communicate. Men and women have many issues that are unique to their own gender, whether they be the roles of mother and father, husband and wife, or daughter and son, or more concrete issues like pregnancy and childbirth vs. following in the traditional men’s roles of being the family breadwinner. All of these issues and more may arise when undergoing rehab and recovery, and men and women generally are more comfortable discussing these issues around people of their same gender. Additionally, the dynamics between men and women are different from the bonds between members of the same sex.
For one, an all-male environment limits the risk for sexual attraction between those in recovery, which is something that residents in rehabilitation or recovery shouldn’t be thinking about anyway. It is necessary for men to be able to bond with other men, and with god, before they should try bonding with women. Men and women’s relationships are much more complicated than male friendships and bonding.
Men should be comfortable sharing their life situation and beginning recovery with other men before they attempt relationships with women. Until they are truly at peace with themselves, male friends, and god, they shouldn’t begin romantic relationships. These trusted, strong relationships within their own gender and with a higher power are essential building blocks for beginning relationships for the rest of their lives.
Benefits of an All-Male Environment in Recovery
At the Benchmark Recovery Center, we understand that the process of addiction often differs in men and women, as do the methods required to treat chemical dependency. Additionally, the dynamics between men and women versus just between men are very different. It’s very important for men in recovery to be fully devoted to trying to make strides toward getting their lives back on track.
Having women around often serves as a distraction from the main goal of sobriety. We are fully dedicated to helping men regain their lives, and feel that an all-male environment provides the best chances for being able to do this. With our proven program, men are able to confront their addiction, work the 12 steps, and integrate all aspects of their selves to experience the inner peace needed to accomplish permanent recovery.
