Discover a Life of Permanent Sobriety

Extended Care Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery

The Benchmark Recovery Center recovery program is a holistic rehab program. Our philosophy and intent is to help our residents become happy, healthy and whole is all areas of their lives. Spirituality is not synonymous with religion. We do not advise our residents on religious matters but we respect their religious beliefs.

Benchmark-spirituality-programAs an essential part of the 12 Step program, we believe it is possible to get and stay sober with the help of a “higher power”. We also believe if a person thoroughly works all of the 12 Steps, a spiritual awakening is possible that can transform a person’s life. We have seen it happen hundreds of times.

There are as many definitions of spirituality as there are opinions. Here are some valuable quotes that attempt to define it far better than we can:

“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience.” – Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

“The essence of spirituality is the search to know our real self, to discover the true nature of consciousness. When we awaken to the true nature of self, we are freed from many of the fears that plague us so unnecessarily. We discover an inner peace that does not depend upon events or circumstances in the world around, a quiet but profound inner fulfillment. We become less self-centered, less needy of others’ approval or recognition, less focused on collecting possessions and social status. We become happier, healthier and more loving people, less likely to cause suffering to ourselves or others.”  – Peter Russell

“Research shows that even skeptics can’t stifle the sense that there is something greater than the concrete world we see. As the brain processes sensory experiences, we naturally look for patterns, and then seek out meaning in those patterns. And the phenomenon known as “cognitive dissonance” shows that once we believe in something, we will try to explain away anything that conflicts with it.” – Psychology Today

In addition to the 12 Steps, there are many aspects of our program that are of a spiritual nature. Yoga and meditation are frequently considered spiritual activities that promote a sense of well-being and peace of mind. Experiencing a beautiful sunset or sunrise on our 70-acre property can evoke a sense of spiritual awe and gratitude. Witnessing the miracle of sobriety, after all hope has been lost, affirms the presence of something much greater than ourselves.

We use a book in the Benchmark program called The Four Agreements, written by Don Miguel Ruiz. We feel this book embodies some of the most important behavioral and spiritual principles necessary for quality recovery and healthy relationships.

Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid speaking derogatorily against yourself and gossiping about others. Use the power of words only in the direction of truth and love.

Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t suffer needlessly.

Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstances, simply do your best and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.

Regardless of whether you have attended alcohol treatment or drug treatment before, the Benchmark extended care holistic rehab program will increase your chances of achieving long-term sobriety.
